Meet the Proudly American Phone Brands: 5 Shining Stars

The United States has a long history with manufacturing cellphones. That history goes all the way back to 1983 when production of the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X began. This was ten years after Martin Cooper made the first phone call on a prototype model [1]. In the decades that followed, other American phone brands emerged and produced devices on US soil.

Those brands included Palm, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Compaq, Dell, Motorola (which later became a Chinese company, and Microsoft. All of these phone brands have since stopped making cellphones.

American Phone Brands

List of the Top American Phone Brands

Below is the list of American mobile phone brands still in operation today:

Apple iPhone

Apple is, by far, the biggest American phone brand, whether it is in terms of shipments, sales, market share, revenue, or profit. There is no other American phone brand that comes close. Apple is a colossus in the mobile phone industry that it makes between 80% and 90% of the profits in the industry globally and has over 50% market share of the US cellphone market.

Apple is one of the rare mobile phone companies that has control of the whole spectrum of their devices, from software to hardware. Apple products are the only mobile devices that run iOS. Apple makes their own chipsets too.

BLU

This is an American company with headquarters in Miami, Florida. It is a small company that was founded in 2009 and that focuses on the budget end of the market. In recent years, BLU has dabbled into upper mid-range devices as well. BLU phones run Android OS. The name BLU was abbreviated from the phrase, Bold Like Us.

Google Pixel

This is a relatively popular American phone brand, though it has a negligible share of the market, both locally in the US and globally. Pixel smartphones are known for their camera prowess, but the brand has been unable to make a serious dent in the market. Being a Google brand, Pixel smartphones run Android OS.

NUU Mobile

Founded in 2010, NUU Mobile is a small American phone brand with headquarters in Irving, Texas. Like BLU, it produces only affordable Android smartphones.

Purism Librem

Purism Librem is the smallest American phone brand. Purism was founded in 2014 and has its headquarters in San Francisco, California. So far, it has released only two phone models, the Librem 5 and the Liberty Phone. Some will argue that they are the same phone with some minor modifications, and that would be a valid argument. The company specializes in producing privacy smartphones that run PureOS, a free, open-source Linux operating system that is designed for privacy and security.

These are the five American phone brands that are active in 2024. Perhaps we will get to see some more come into operation in the years ahead. Apple is proudly shining in the domestic and international markets. Google Pixel is also widely known and acknowledged, though it does not have the iPhone’s numbers. The other three – BLU, NUU, and Purism – are all niche players. All are proudly American and keeping the Stars and Stripes flying and singing the Star-Spangled banner.
